Andrew Ooi

Andrew Ooi is an artist based in Toronto who takes paper beyond the surface on which to create, manipulating it until the paper itself is the final work.

Ooi's works are inherently sculptural, with significant structural integrity. They simultaneously appear delicate and strong, their fragile materials reinforced by symmetry and inscrutable polygon patterning. The intensity of labour required to make each piece is striking, with not only the act of assembling each structure but the process of cutting designing each paper surface as well. Because of this care, they offer a different view at every angle, with no two sides the same perspective of his hand painted paper.

Andrew Ooi's paper sculptures are compelling in their intricacy, vibrant colour palette, and complex compositions. They invite us back to a childhood desire to build and play, while creating a mature and cohesive body of work.
